Publishers Description: This is the story of New Zealands most notorious art forger. Charles Frederick Goldie is the countrys most famous artist. Carl Feodor Goldie is the most infamous forger. Karl Feodor Sim, as he started out in life, spent nearly two decades fooling the countrys art experts with his extraordinary takes of work of the likes of C.F. Goldie, Petrus van der Velden and Nicholas Chevalier. Sim, a talented painter in his own right, stumbled into the forgery business purely by chance. A friend added false signatures to some of Sims work, and sent them off to a major auction house - where they were readily accepted as the real thing. After that, Sim couldnt resist. The Foxton antique dealer was eventually nabbed after suspicions were aroused about the number of rediscovered masterpieces coming out of the small Manawatu town. Sim was arrested in 1985 and charged with art forgery. He was convicted and fined $1000 and ordered to undertake 200 hours community service.
