Publishers Description: Faced with losing his centuries-old family estate to debt, Tom Hurstbourne headed to colonial Australia to make his fortune. He had no idea that the Shrewsbury lawyer he left in charge of his affairs would snatch this chance to exact the ultimate revenge on Tom, the last of the Hurstbourne dynasty... Written in 1865 but never published this novel is the first work of Queensland fiction to be written in Queensland and portrays the colonial squatter experience on a Peak Downs station. Although far from being a 'great' novel, it includes fascinating aspects of Queensland's social, political and cultural life of the time. The climax of the story was probably based on the real events of the nearby Cullin-la-Ringo massacre of 1861.
