Carnegie was born in Dunfermline in 1835, butpoverty forced the Carnegies to emigrate to Pittsburgh.Andrew was taken under the wing of Thomas A. Scott, atPennsylvania Railroad. Carnegie worked his way up and,after the Civil War, saw the potential in the ironindustry and resigned from the Railroad. It was one ofmany bold moves that would typify Carnegies life inindustry and earn him his fortune. His steel juggernautbecame unstoppable, and by 1900 Carnegie Steel producedmore of the metal than Great Britain. After selling hiscompany Carnegie, with his wife and daughter, returned toScotland. He bought Skibo Castle in 1898 and hereentertained King Edward VII, the Rockefellers, RudyardKipling, Lloyd George, and Helen Keller. He was one ofthe first to call for a "league of nations" and he gaveaway 350 million dollars in charitable schemes.
